Madrid after dark
Madrid is one of the hottest cities in Europe when it comes to nightlife. As with many European cities, Madrid gets going late, there’s no point setting off until after ten; most people have a leisurely dinner with wine and then head out at around 11 – bear in mind many clubs don’t open until after 11.30.
Madrid is a stylish city and many clubs (or discotecas) have dress codes. A smart look is the best way to guarantee entry – trainers and jeans should certainly be left at home! If you have a specific club that you want to head to it’s best to check at your hotel to see what the dress code is; another benefit of this is that the staff may well be able to get you on the guestlist. Many clubs in Madrid are open until morning with some even carrying on the revelry to midday the next day!
The most famous discotecas in Madrid include Joy Eslava on Arenal Street and Kapital in Calle Atocha. Joy Eslava caters to a largely local crowd and is housed within an old fifties theatre. This decadent setting provides a suitable backdrop to chic and lavish nights such as Cinema on Sundays and Fabulush on Fridays. Entrance cost can be up to 18 euros without a voucher. Expect queues and a set list of international hits. Joy Eslava is open from 11.30 to 6am. Kapital is one of the most modern clubs in the city, as well as one of the largest; consisting of seven rooms all dedicated to different types of music. The cover charge is 12 euros including at least one free drink.
If night clubbing is not your think tapas bars and coffee shops stay open late meaning you can have a leisurely night out with out the frenetic atmosphere of a busy club.
